Walled Garden, Southwick
A West Sussex walled garden redesigned for privacy, outdoor dining and a working vegetable garden for the owners’ retirement.
The garden
The client wanted to modernise their garden and make it easier to manage. Naomi designed it with clean lines, timeless materials and planting chosen to give interest through the year. It is a place to relax, eat outdoors and entertain, with calm and practicality in equal measure.
Privacy mattered, so Naomi chose standard trees to give height and structure. They form a natural green screen and backdrop, and draw the eye upward, giving a sense of enclosure while the rest of the garden stays open and light. The result is a sheltered, private space within the garden’s walls.
The client also wanted to grow her own vegetables and fruit, in a way that would stay easy to manage when she retires. Naomi added raised beds and a layout that is easy to reach, with little bending. A dedicated vegetable garden and fruit trees sit alongside the ornamental planting, so the productive areas look as good as the rest of the garden.

The plan
The master plan: a pergola and shaded seating area, a main patio, raised vegetable and flower beds, a sunken lawn, a greenhouse and a boundary of standard trees for height and privacy.
During the build
The groundworks and early build, before the planting and paving were finished.
