Garden design and planting in Tillington

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Tillington, Upperton and River, a mile from Petworth. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she comes to you by appointment to see the garden and hear how you would like to use it.

Whether your Tillington garden needs a fresh plan or a few well-chosen changes, Naomi sketches her designs by hand first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, so you can see how the garden will look and work before anything is built.

Gardens in and around Tillington

Tillington is a village in the Chichester district of West Sussex, about a mile west of Petworth on the A272, inside the South Downs National Park. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Upperton, River and River Common, and part of Petworth Park, a Grade I registered park landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, lies within it. The village has had a conservation area since 1984.

All Hallows Church is Grade I listed, and its tower is topped by a crown of curved buttresses that Historic England records as the only such crown in any Sussex church. With a landscape like this on the doorstep, views and boundaries matter. Naomi starts with the views you want to keep, and the ones you would like to frame or screen.

Planting on the Petworth ridge

The village stands on Lower Greensand sandstone, on the same ridge as Petworth, with the clay land of the Low Weald just to the north. Soil maps show mainly freely draining, slightly acid loamy soil around the village, with some wetter, heavier ground, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit.

She then chooses plants for your soil, light and shelter, and for the weather ahead, with colour and interest running through the year.
