Gardens in and around Petworth

Petworth is a town in the Chichester district of West Sussex, inside the South Downs National Park, standing on a Wealden sandstone ridge at the southern edge of the Low Weald. It has had a conservation area since 1971. Petworth House and Park, a National Trust property in a 700-acre deer park, has a pleasure garden designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, and the park and pleasure grounds are registered Grade I.

In the centre of the town most gardens and courtyards are private and sit behind the buildings, with front gardens mainly on outer streets such as Pound Street and Angel Street. So many Petworth gardens are tucked-away, enclosed spaces, where privacy, a place to sit and planting that works at close quarters matter most.

Planting on the sandstone ridge

The town stands on a Lower Greensand sandstone ridge. Soil maps show mostly loamy, slightly acid, freely draining ground around the town centre, with some heavier, wetter patches, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit before choosing plants.

In an enclosed garden, planting gives walls and boundaries height, scent and colour through the year. Naomi chooses plants for your soil and light and for the wetter winters and drier summers ahead.
