Garden design and planting in Midhurst

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Midhurst and the villages around it. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she visits by appointment, so she can see the garden and listen to what you want from it.

Whatever stage your Midhurst garden has reached, Naomi begins with a hand sketch of the whole space and then a 3D model in SketchUp, so the layout and the planting are settled before any work starts.

Gardens in and around Midhurst

Midhurst is a market town on the River Rother in West Sussex, inside the South Downs National Park, at the foot of the chalk scarp of the Downs. The town has a conservation area that takes in the Grade I listed ruins of Cowdray House, and its buildings use local sandstone, red brick and clay tiles. Most of the foliage you see in the town comes from trees in private gardens.

The South Downs National Park Authority is the local planning authority here, so it is worth checking the rules before you change trees, boundaries or buildings. Mention it at the first visit and Naomi will plan around it.

Planting on the Greensand

The historic core of Midhurst is built almost entirely on the Sandgate beds of the Lower Greensand, a sandstone, and the South Downs National Park Authority describes the Greensand landscape of the Rother valley as having well-drained sandy soils. A band of clay also crosses the town, so soil can differ from one garden to the next.

Naomi checks your soil and light at the first visit and chooses plants to suit them, with an eye on the wetter winters and drier summers ahead, so there is colour and interest through the year.
