Garden design and planting in Chichester

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Chichester and the villages around the city. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she comes to you by appointment to see the space and hear how you would like to use it.

A Chichester garden might be a small town garden behind a terrace, a family garden on the edge of the city or a larger plot that needs a plan. Naomi sketches each one by hand first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, so you can see the layout and the planting together.

Gardens in and around Chichester

Chichester is the only city in West Sussex, on a flat plain between the South Downs and the coast. The townscape around the Market Cross is largely Georgian, in red brick and render, and many of the houses on the back streets have private gardens hidden behind them. Larger houses in the Cathedral Close sit in large gardens. The city is a gateway to the South Downs National Park, whose hills form its backdrop to the north.

Chichester has places that show what a garden can be: the Bishop’s Palace Gardens, open to the public beside the Cathedral, and Priory Park, beside the old city walls. At home, a walled or enclosed garden can be a calm, private room outdoors, and Naomi plans the space so every part of it earns its place.

Planting for a Chichester garden

The city sits on the coastal plain, on gravels and brickearth, with the chalk of the Downs to the north. Soil varies from garden to garden, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit before choosing plants.

In a town garden, planting gives an enclosed space height, scent and colour through the year, and softens walls and boundaries. Naomi chooses plants for your soil and light and for the climate ahead.

Questions about garden design in Chichester

Does Naomi design gardens in Chichester?
Yes. Naomi works with homeowners in Chichester and the villages around it, by appointment, from her base in Shoreham-by-Sea.
Can Naomi design a small town garden in Chichester?
Yes. Many Chichester houses have private gardens tucked behind them, and Naomi plans small spaces so every part works, with seating, planting and privacy designed together.
My home is in a conservation area. Does that change anything?
Much of central Chichester is in a conservation area. If your home is, mention it at the first visit so the plan allows for it, and check with Chichester District Council before changing trees or boundary walls.
