Garden design and planting in Burgess Hill

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Burgess Hill and Mid Sussex, and her Burgess Hill work includes the design of a large sloped garden. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she visits by appointment to see your garden and hear what you want from it.

Naomi sketches her designs by hand on paper first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, with layout and planting together, so a redesign or a new plot can be settled before work begins.

Gardens in and around Burgess Hill

Burgess Hill grew up as a new town of the railway age, after the London to Brighton line opened through it in 1841, and most of its buildings date from the 20th century. Mid Sussex District Council has three conservation areas in the town: Silverdale Road and Birchwood Grove Road, where Victorian and Edwardian houses stand in large gardens with mature trees, St John’s, and Fairfield, with its small Victorian terraces and small front gardens.

So a Burgess Hill garden might be a large family plot, a long garden behind a Victorian terrace or a newer estate garden. St John’s Park, a Green Flag park, gives long views to the South Downs. Naomi starts with the space you have, the views you want to keep and how you use the garden.

Planting in the Low Weald

Burgess Hill sits in the Low Weald, on the Weald Clay Formation, which has been the main source of brickmaking clay in Sussex. Gardens often have clay in them, though soil varies, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit before choosing plants.

She chooses plants for your site, your light and the wetter winters and drier summers ahead, and for a sloping garden she plans levels, steps and planting together so the whole garden works.
