Garden design and planting in Graffham

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Graffham and the villages around Midhurst and Petworth. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she visits by appointment to see your garden and hear what you want from it.

Naomi sketches her designs by hand on paper first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, so the layout, the planting and the views from the house are settled before any work begins. You decide at the end of each stage whether to carry on.

Gardens in and around Graffham

Graffham is a village in the Chichester district of West Sussex, inside the South Downs National Park. Its post town is Petworth, and Graffham Common, a Sussex Wildlife Trust reserve, lies between Midhurst and Petworth. The village has had a conservation area since 1984, and medieval buildings including Church Farm, Ladywell Cottage and Stewart’s Cottage. Its church, St Giles, was largely rebuilt in 1875 to designs by G E Street and keeps two nave arches from the twelfth century.

Graffham grew in a line along the foot of the Downs, where springs rise, and the ground changes along its length. Depending on where in the village you live, a garden can sit on chalk, greensand or clay.

Planting where the Downs meet the greensand

The village sits where the chalk of the Downs meets the greensand and clay below it. Soil maps show shallow, lime-rich ground in places, light acid sandy soil around the Common and heavier ground that is slow to drain elsewhere. Naomi checks yours at the first visit before she chooses a single plant.

Matching plants to soil is the heart of planting design, and it is Naomi’s passion. She chooses plants to suit your ground and light, with the wetter winters and drier summers ahead in mind.
