Garden design and planting in West Chiltington

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in West Chiltington and the villages around Storrington and Pulborough. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she visits by appointment, so she can see the garden and hear what you want from it.

Naomi sketches her designs by hand on paper first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, with the layout and the planting together, before any work begins. You decide at the end of each stage whether to carry on.

Gardens in and around West Chiltington

West Chiltington is a village in the Horsham district of West Sussex, about 2.6 miles north of Storrington, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. The old village has a conservation area, designated in 1973, and a Grade I listed church, St Mary’s, with nave and chancel walls from the late eleventh century and wall paintings from the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The village’s neighbourhood plan describes the Common as largely low-density housing on tree-lined roads.

Parham House and Gardens, an Elizabethan house with four acres of walled gardens, is about three miles away. Naomi has volunteered in the gardens at Parham House, and she brings a close eye for planting to every garden she designs.

Planting on the Common and in the old village

The Common sits on Lower Greensand: most of it lies on a sandstone that gives it a heathland character, and soil maps show very acid, sandy, freely draining ground there. The older village to the north has loamy, slightly acid, freely draining soil on the maps, and clay lies further north in the parish.

On free-draining ground a border can struggle through a dry summer, so Naomi checks your soil at the first visit and chooses plants that will cope, as well as the wetter winters ahead. Planting is her passion, and her borders are colourful and modern cottage in style.

Questions about garden design in West Chiltington

Does Naomi design gardens in West Chiltington?
Yes. Naomi works with homeowners in West Chiltington, Storrington, Pulborough and the villages between, by appointment, from her base in Shoreham-by-Sea.
My garden is on the Common. Does the sandy soil change what you plant?
It does. Sandy, free-draining ground suits some plants and not others, so Naomi looks at your soil and drainage at the first visit and chooses plants to match.
Is West Chiltington in the South Downs National Park?
The village sits on the edge of the Park, with only a very small part of the parish inside it. If you are unsure where your home falls, check with the South Downs National Park Authority or Horsham District Council before changing trees or buildings.
