Naomi Ferrett-Cohen plans gardens and planting for homes in Brighton and Hove. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, based a few miles along the coast in Shoreham-by-Sea, and she visits by appointment to see your garden and hear how you want to use it.
City gardens ask a lot of a small space: somewhere to sit, privacy, planting that looks good from the window and room for the family. Naomi sketches her designs by hand on paper first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, so you can see how the garden will work before anything is built.
Gardens in Brighton and Hove
Brighton and Hove is a city on the Sussex coast, between the South Downs and the sea, and over 40% of the city lies inside the South Downs National Park. The city council counts more than 30 conservation areas, from Regency squares and terraces to villages on the downs. The Victorian suburbs grew up around the railway stations, and inter-war garden suburbs later doubled the size of the city.
That history means Brighton and Hove gardens come in many shapes: a long, narrow terrace garden, a courtyard, a garden behind a Victorian villa or a family garden in a larger suburban plot. Naomi has designed gardens of many shapes and sizes, and she starts every plan by looking at the space you have and how you want to use it.
Planting near the sea and the Downs
The chalk of the South Downs lies under Brighton and Hove, but the soil in a garden varies from street to street, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit before choosing plants.
Near the coast the wind often carries salt, so planting has to be chosen with care. Naomi knows these conditions first hand: her own garden is by the sea and exposed to the wind. She matches the planting to the exposure of each garden, so it thrives in wind and salt.
