Garden design and planting in Horsham

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen has a Horsham garden in her portfolio: a half-acre barn conversion, planned from the ground up. She is a garden designer and RHS Chelsea Silver-Gilt medallist, and she plans gardens and planting for homes in Horsham and the villages around it, by appointment.

If your Horsham garden needs rethinking, Naomi sketches her designs by hand first, then builds a 3D model in SketchUp, with the layout and planting together, before work begins.

Gardens in and around Horsham

Horsham is a market town and the administrative centre of Horsham District, on the western edge of the High Weald, on a slope that falls from about 90 metres to about 40 metres above sea level. The historic core, around the Causeway, is a conservation area of medieval and later buildings, and Horsham Stone, a flaggy sandstone, is a traditional roofing material.

The housing runs from early 19th-century villas and terraces near Carfax, through late Victorian terraces and semi-detached homes near the station, to 20th-century semi-detached estates, bungalows and small blocks of flats. Each starts a garden from a different place, and Naomi begins with the space you have and what you want from it.

Planting for a Horsham garden

Most of Horsham, including the old core, sits on sandstones and silty sandstones, with bands of clay mudstone through the suburbs and Weald Clay at the northern and south-western edges. Soil can change from one garden to the next, so Naomi checks yours at the first visit before choosing plants.

Her Horsham barn conversion shows the approach: she planned the half-acre site first, then worked on the planting of the entrance, the courtyard and the main garden over an extended period, with borders chosen for the site and for the climate ahead.

Not only is Naomi super talented but she brings such zen to my world 🧘‍♀️🌺. She's designed our dream garden but completely understands that we can't implement it all at once. We debated doing it in stages and leaving parts totally unfinished but have come to the conclusion that a more basic whole garden is more useful to us.

Questions about garden design in Horsham

Has Naomi designed a garden in Horsham?
Yes. Her Horsham barn conversion garden covers a half-acre site, planned across three areas: the entrance, the courtyard and the main garden. You can see it in her portfolio.
Can Naomi design a larger garden in Horsham?
Yes. Naomi plans big plots carefully, planning the whole site first and then the planting of each area, so the garden matures well.
Can Naomi do the planting in my Horsham garden?
Yes, if you would like her to. She sources the plants from specialist nurseries and plants the garden alongside your landscaper, so it finishes as it was designed.
