Hospital Garden, Berkshire

A peaceful escape at the heart of Wexham Park Hospital, in three linked areas for visitors, patients and nurses.

The garden

After the Finding Our Way garden at the front of Wexham Park Hospital, Naomi began designing a much larger garden for the main part of the hospital grounds. It is a peaceful escape for everyone at the hospital, right at the centre of the site, divided into three areas, each with a clear purpose and tied together by a single style.

The first area welcomes the general public with a quiet space to unwind. Varied planting changes with the seasons, and seating lets visitors sit back and take a moment for themselves, away from the hospital environment.

The second is a more private retreat for patients in the Intensive Therapy Unit, where they can get some fresh air and enjoy natural surroundings that stimulate the senses gently through sight, smell and touch. The design also considers family visits, making it easier for loved ones to spend time together in a comforting space.

The third area is for the nurses: a place to step away from demanding duties and recharge, with comfortable seating and shaded areas for a break or a chat with colleagues.

The latest design

The space available for the garden was reduced, so Naomi created a new design to suit the smaller area. It keeps the same aim: a calm place at the heart of the hospital to sit among planting, away from the wards.

Concrete and timber benches sit among beds of agapanthus, foxgloves and other colourful planting, with clipped hedges and standard trees giving height and shelter. A pergola with a fabric canopy shades the seating, and corten planters and a gabion bench add structure.
